Join us for the inaugural film in SI's 2020-21 film series, How We Respond. This series explores the different ways people are meeting the many challenges of sustainability, from climate change to systemic racism to economic hardship. Whether it's trying to innovate on a family farm or risking one's life to be captured by ICE in pursuit of immigration justice, the everyday heroes of these films provoke us to think about how each of us can respond in our own way--"bringing our stone to the pile," as Alice Walker writes, to contribute to a better future however we can. All films will be shown virtually online in partnership with WPSU and its OVEE platform and will be followed by post-film discussions. All films are free and open to everyone.
Our first film is Shaena Mallett's Farmsteaders, an intimate portrait of a regular dairy farm family in eastern Ohio, struggling against a hidden backdrop of falling commodity prices and industrialized agriculture. Without any heroics or self-pity, they quietly try to persevere in raising their family and finding a way to keep their family's farming legacy alive. A beautiful portrait of struggle and determination filmed over five years. Learn more (and find the link to register and watch the screening) here.
